The Serrano Towers was once one of twelve gates that formed the city walls of Valencia. Built in the 1390´s, the walls provided defense for the city, and now Serrano towers is one of the best preserved landmarks in the city, with a breathtaking view of the city from the top. In the Plaza de la Virgen, you will find the cathedral which took centuries to finish. Because of this, you can see the changes in the style of architecture, starting with Romanesque and changing to Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical. The cathedral has been named a cultural landmark.
Valencia is home to many important and delicious Spanish dishes. Paella was first made in Valencia, and you will find the most authentic paella here. You can take a trip to El Palmar, where the rice is grown and try several types of paella. Eating tapas for a late dinner is also very popular in Spain. Tapas are a great way to try lots of different small dishes like spicy potatoes, croquetas (fried vegetables or meat in breadcrumbs) or calamari. Popular drinks of course include sangria but also Agua de Valencia (an alcoholic orange juice drink) and espressos.
